Ingredients*

2 pounds ground turkey

2 eggs

2 cups cooked brown rice

8 ounces of peas

3 carrots, diced

1 apple, diced

Directions*

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In mixing bowl, combine all ingredients. Mix well by hand. On baking sheet, roll into balls (size depends on your pet’s size). Bake at 375 degrees for 45 minutes. Let cool and serve.

*The original recipe called for garlic. We eliminated garlic to make the recipe safer. The original recipe also called for the ingredients to be molded into a bone. Rolling into balls is easier to serve as treats, and a variety of sizes can be made.

Recipe: Yum! The Baconator

This recipe was published in the Fall 2011 issue of The Modern Dog. It is inexpensive and makes approximately 100 one-inch square treats for dogs.

Ingredients

2 eggs

1 cup milk

1/2 cup water, or low sodium chicken stock, or water from canned tuna

6 tablespoons bacon fat, melted (save your bacon grease)

4 cups whole wheat flour

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees (175 C).

2. Lightly grease a cookie sheet.

3. Beat eggs in large bowl. Stir in milk, water, and bacon fat until blended.

4. Gradually stir in flour to make a stiff dough.

5. Roll out dough to 1/4 inches thickness and cut with a pizza cutter, or a cookie cutter in desired shape.

6. Place on prepared cookie sheet.

7. Bake in preheated oven for twenty minutes for a soft cookie, and 30 minutes for a firm cookie.

8. Cool on racks and store in a covered container in the refrigerator.

9. If the treats won’t be consumed in two weeks, freeze the remainder to keep them fresh.

*Small amounts of bacon fat adds flavor to these cookies. Too much bacon fat can cause serious health problems like pancreatitis, so it is best given in small amounts. Serve treats in moderation.

Recipe: Retriever Stew

Yum! Retriever Stew! Don’t worry though; this isn’t made with retrievers, but it will have the mouths of pups watering!

Ingredients

1/2 pound stewing veal

1 cup canned tomatoes

1 cup water

1 chicken bullion cube

Dash of parsley

Directions

Combine ingredients in a pot and let simmer. When the meat is tender, take it out and cut into small chunks. This next step is VERY important: Remove the bones! Mix stew with kibble or another grain, like rice. Make sure the meat cools before feeding.
